Manorhamilton

Dark Lies the Island

Manorhamilton is a temporary waystation in Patrick and Tee-J’s travels: a place where a plan to seek shelter in caves gives way to a stay at a crustie camp, and where a brief attempt at communal hospitality becomes another reason to leave.

Arrival and Circumstances

Caves had seemed a possible destination, but the brothers instead spent time at a crustie camp outside Manorhamilton. The camp offered them a place to stay and access to recently dried magic mushrooms, which its residents shared with them. Their arrival follows the improvised logic of the brothers’ journey: one uncertain plan is abandoned for another available place, without any suggestion of a settled home or long-term purpose.

Conflict at the Camp

The mushrooms quickly made the stay difficult for Tee-J, who began seeing an apparition of the brothers’ dead mother in the back of the White Hitachi. That experience was enough to put an end to their use of the drugs. The episode turns a shared resource into a source of distress, and the brothers’ response is immediate: they stop taking the mushrooms rather than continue the experience.

A separate misunderstanding involving Patrick then escalated into a row. He misread a signal from one of the crustie women and made an unwelcome physical advance; the ensuing confrontation involved a crowbar, a man from Gloucester, and a three-legged pitbull. The account supplies no further resolution or detail about the dispute, but its abrupt arrival compounds the trouble at the camp.

Departure and Narrative Significance

The narration closes the episode with the dry farewell, “Good luck, Manorhamilton.” The line makes the place feel less like a destination than one more failed pause in a journey governed by provisional arrangements and sudden complications. The brothers subsequently travel east as far as Longford, where they take work for a farmer; their stay at Manorhamilton is thus one incident in a continuing sequence of movement rather than a return or homecoming.
